Our History
Cherish Women’s Cancer Foundation was founded in 2012 by Professor Andreas Obermair with a clear and compassionate mission: to improve outcomes for women diagnosed with gynaecological cancers. What began as a grassroots initiative has grown into a nationally recognised charity, driven by community support, scientific innovation, and a deep commitment to making cancer treatment kinder and more effective. These improved outcomes are made possible through world-class medical research. With government funding covering only a limited portion, Cherish is dedicated to bridging the gap by actively raising the funds needed to drive this vital work forward.
In the early years, Cherish captured public attention through its signature fundraising event, The Battle Against Ovarian Cancer, a friendly beach volleyball tournament. As the organisation evolved, so did its identity — with a refreshed brand, a new website, and a growing network of advocates across Australia.
Cherish’s journey has been marked by bold challenges and heartfelt celebrations. From treks to Everest, Larapinta, the Kimberley, and Mt Kilimanjaro, to elegant luncheons and gala dinners, every event has been a testament to the power of community and the belief that together, we can create a kinder tomorrow for women facing cancer.
But the heart of Cherish lies in its commitment to medical research. Thanks to the generosity of donors, Cherish has raised over $4.2 million to fund several major research projects targeting underfunded cancers — including endometrial, vulvar and ovarian cancer. These multi-year, multi-stage studies are changing the way gynaecological cancers are diagnosed and treated:
LACE Trial: Proved laparoscopic surgery for endometrial cancer is as effective as open surgery, with fewer complications.
feMMe Study: Explored non-surgical hormonal treatments for early-stage endometrial cancer.
- feMMe Molecular: Developing a personalised decision-making tool for treatment options for endometrial cancer.
- Pre-ANVU and NODE: Investigating ultrasound to reduce unnecessary surgery in vulvar cancer.
- ANVU Trial: A national clinical trial aiming to spare women with vulvar cancer from invasive procedures.
- IMAGE Trial: Compared CT and PET-CT scans to improve staging and treatment planning for ovarian cancer.
Every project funded by Cherish is a step toward more personalised, less invasive and more effective gynaecological cancer care. By investing in research that challenges outdated norms and prioritises patient wellbeing, Cherish is not only improving survival rates — it’s transforming lives.
Today, Cherish continues to grow, guided by the belief that women deserve better. With every donation, every event, and every breakthrough, we move closer to a future where gynaecological cancer is met not with fear, but with hope, compassion, and cutting-edge care.
